Although it has a lot of rules, astrology is a site that challenges the binary. Good & evil, us & them, gender norms and so on, rob us of our birth-right to enjoy nonsense. The universe is like a mumbling poet, giving us some (but not all) of its meaning. Most of us nod and pretend to understand, while filling the gaps with rage and fear. Could we bear it if we did not impose falsities upon the mysterious thing we must trust? On second thought, does the falsity even exist? Anything and everything will always point back to you. And you are the mystery, the unknown, which for so many, is an enemy ripping us from sleep. Astrology can lay us to rest. It helps explain things without undoing the mystery, without completely undoing you. It says the truth, but how? I don’t even know.
Just like everything else, Astrology changes to reflect the shifts of the humans who practice it. We, you, I, the lineage bearers, relate differently to what we inherit. Some traditions endure, some die. Some practitioners are austere, some are innovative. I do a little of both, but maybe that’s stating the obvious. Systems don’t have to be boring or crushing, and the sky is our ancient counter-measure.
