Jupiter Direct & the grand conjunction
Jupiter went direct in Capricorn today! It will remain in Capricorn until late December and transition into Aquarius in a grand conjunction with Saturn on the 21st of December, with Pluto trailing closely behind. For the next 100 to 200 years, Saturn and Jupiter will continue to make conjunctions only in air signs—with this upcoming conjunction being the first in this new era of AIR. The three air signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are the astrological building blocks which bridge the gap between the emerging self and the established world. Gemini sets up relational foundations. Libra investigates the interpersonal tensions and/or harmonies that erupt there. Aquarius interrogates and maneuvers outside those social frameworks—beckoning Gemini to start a new cycle of relations. This upcoming grand conjunction will set the tone for this work for the next century and a half.
A direct Jupiter is known to invigorate the zeitgeist with a fiercer connection to divinity, economic abundance, general good fortune and comprehensive optimism. It may seem as though this direct motion is plucking us out of the retrograded, joyless lull we’ve been in. But because of the approaching grand conjunction, the fact of the matter is, that a direct Jupiter (still in Capricorn, no less) is like one good shoe. Our expanded outlook alone, cannot repair long-standing problems. We’ve just scratched the surface and Jupiter is asking us to reinstate hope within our collective psyche. We are being asked not to lose sight of why we strive for transformation and change. The inevitable moments of fatigue will lead us to rest, but they should not deter our larger hopes for a better tomorrow. The odds seem to be stacked against the average person, and stratified in their impact athwart the lines of our varied identities. But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We are nowhere near reaching it, and maybe we won’t in our lifetime, but we need to love that light fiercely in order to uproot the current hegemony of power.
One of my curiosities about the grand conjunction is about social and physical breathability. Concerns with our environment and ecology come up, and continue to build on the themes of air and breath that have unraveled this year in 2020. I imagine over the next century and a half, the urgency for handling the climate crisis will accelerate, and technological strides will be made in order to manage the too-little-too-late devastation that we are already facing on this planet. These air conjunctions will also usher in the sophistication of AI. I imagine grievances with the surveillance state may reach a set of peaks. Our relationship to community will take on massive shifts with the rise of social media technology. I am particularly weary of the kind of expansion and hoarding of power that may occur for tech companies. All of this is already at play, but will only intensify from here on in.
